I can't promise that I'll have room to use it, but I'll try.

Today's questions
What do I say when asked what my book is like?

Question 1:
What do I say when asked what my book is like?

Answer:
If a publisher or an agent asks you this question, (or a distributor or bookstore
owner) they're asking because they want to know what category to slot your book.
Remember, they're usually looking for a variation on what was a big seller last
season, so don't stray too far from that. And if your book is truly completely
different from everything that's now on the market, that last thing you should be
doing is presenting that as a virtue. Instead, look for the similarities between
your book and those books that are big sellers right now.
Being completely different isn't going to win you any points. Very few publishers
(and no agents) are looking for the revolutionary new concept in plot, genre
development or layout. If your'e a first-time author, you're an unknown quantity.
That's quite enough 'new' for most folks in the book industry.

If you're thinking about increasing your revenue on the internet, here's a
program that has earned people like yourself literally thousands of dollars. Take

Question 2:
Why can't I send my manuscript to a publisher without the help of an agent?

Answer:
The truth is, you can. But your chances of being published this way are hair
better than NEVER! Your manuscript goes into a pile with hundreds of other
manuscripts. It must be filtered through several readers and junior editors
before it ever gets to the point of being on an editor's desk. And at any point
during that process, it can be dismissed out of hand for any one of a thousand
reasons (including having a junior editor who dated someone with your last name
and hates it…) And, if it does get to the editor's desk, it will probably be
returned out of hand, because if the manuscript was any good, it would be
represented by an agent, right? If you think that the sheer quality of your
writing and your book concept will get you through this morass, you're wrong.
Take a look at the big sellers right now. Quality writing is nice, but it's not
necessary.

Until next time,
Cheers, and keep writing
